Two other victims were seriously injured at school in the western town of Trollhattan.

Witnesses describe the chaos at school, with hundreds of students fleeing the building screaming.

Police responded to an emergency call reporting an attack in the area of school cafe area Kronan, around 10:10 local time (8:10 GMT) on Thursday.

A teacher died of his injuries on the spot.

Two male students, 11 and 15, and another teacher ages were taken to hospital.

One boy is dead.

Swedish Radio reports that police - including bomb technicians - are in a direction in Trollhattan, thought to be the home of the suspect.

Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter published a photo allegedly showing the assailant posing in the school corridor, ahead of the attacks.

It shows a man dressed in black, with a helmet, a mask and a sword, possibly resembling a Nazi SS outfit.

A girl in the eighth grade told the newspaper that was in math class when they saw the masked man in the hallway.

"We thought it was a Halloween prank," she said. "He was dressed all in black and had a mask."

The girl said her teacher stepped into the hall and tried to remove the mask, and it was then that the man attacked and stabbed with the sword, he said.

Police spokesman Thomas Fuxborg said police fired two shots, one of them hit the attacker. No reason was given for the attack.

A student told the local newspaper: "I was in a classroom with my class when one of the sisters of my classmates called her to warn that there was a murderer in school So he locked the door of the classroom but our teacher was. even outside in the hallway.

"We wanted to warn you, so some of us went out and then I saw the murderer, wearing a mask and had a sword. Our teacher stabbed.

"The murderer began to persecute me, I found another classroom. If I had not run, I would have been killed. I feel very afraid. Everybody is afraid here."

Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Lofven  travel to Trollhattan this afternoon. He said it was a "black day for Sweden".

"I think of the victims and their families, students and staff, and all of the affected community. There are no words to describe what is happening now. We must ensure that they receive all the support they need" said.

Interior Minister of Sweden, Anders Ygeman, said on Twitter: "It is with sadness and dismay I received the news of the attack on the school in Trollhattan My thoughts go to the victims and their families.".

Trollhättan is an industrial city in western Sweden, located about 75km (50 miles) north of Gothenburg, the country's second largest city.

School attacks are rare in Sweden - this is the first since a school shooting in Kungälv near Gothenburg in 1961, which killed one person and wounded six others.
